DILDOS, DRUGS & DROIDS: TECHNOLOGIES OF DESIRE
curated by Szu Burgess & Stephen Kent Jusick
The cyborg is resolutely committed to partiality, irony, intimacy, and perversity.
It is oppositional, utopian, and completely without innocence. No longer structured
by the polarity of public and private, the cyborg defines a technological polis
based partly on a revolution of social relations in the oikos, the household.
Late twentieth-century machines have made thoroughly ambiguous the difference
between natural and artificial, mind and body, self-developing and externally
designed, and many other distinctions that used to apply to organisms and machines.
Our machines are disturbingly lively, and we ourselves frighteningly inert.
A cyborg world might be about lived social and bodily realities in which people
are not afraid of their joint kinship with animals and machines, not afraid
of permanently partial identities and contradictory standpoints.
—Donna Haraway
From the simplest appliance (say a condom or a butt plug or rubber gloves) to
more elaborate gear (electronic dildos, highspeed internet broadcasts), technology
has always been part of the ways queers express themselves on the street or
in the bedroom. This program demonstrates and investigates the use or fantasy
of tools and technology, broadly defined. From the clunky, retro fucking androids
in ROBOTTOM, to more austere uses of science fiction to the internet, as a tool
to remake, fabricate and impersonate identity, to mechanical aids/prostheses/appendages….or
any scientific or medical alteration: these are all within the province of our
show. Modern medicine is also full of cyborgs, of couplings between organism
and machine, each conceived as coded devices, in an intimacy and with a power:
or Andrew Hiller’s 16mm tranny porno shot in the gorgeous decrepitude of
Bushwick (is this the only tranny porn on 16mm?). Butch and femme are constructs,
and can be enhanced or hidden with the use of items outside the body. Have you
ever seen a boy next door type age a little and morph into a bear? It’s
all accoutrements, a little pluck here, a little buff and stuff there. This
program brings together a mosaic of secrets and strategies, revealing how we
can choose to constitute ourselves. And never fear, explicit sex is never far
from the screen in this show!
